What is Ethereum Name Service?

ENS is Ethereum’s on-chain naming layer: names like alice.eth resolve to addresses, content hashes (IPFS sites), and structured records—so wallets and apps can show human-readable identities instead of hex strings. It also supports reverse records (address → primary name) for cleaner UX.

Registration works through .eth contracts with rent/renewal rules; DNS-based imports let you bridge existing domains. Unlike ICANN DNS, ownership is non-custodial if you control the name’s keys—phishing and social recovery choices are still your problem.

ENS the token participates in DAO governance over pricing, controller contracts, and the public goods treasury. Name demand can be cultural (short handles) or practical (brand protection)—liquidity for the token can move independently from registration revenue.
